On February 10, 2009 two satellites crashed in space.  The American Iridium-33 communications satellite and the old Russian Kosmos-251 satellite crashed at 25,200 m.p.h. It has added 400-500 more pieces of space junk in space.

Space junk is going all around the earth.  It is becoming a threat to shuttle missions.  The size of the space junk is from smaller than 1 inch to the size of a shuttle booster pack.

The shuttle mission Discovery is planned to take off on February 22nd. NASA said “it is not going to cancel the flight.”  When the space shuttle is in space it will add to the space junk.

NASA wants to clean it up but they do not know how to clean it up.
